It was like a potted plant. At first, you thought there was some hope left, so you allow the plant to continue growing by itself. Gradually it started to die. You say it's because it lacked water, sunlight and nutrients. So you decided to leave it there, alone, slowly wilting its life away.
I say, it just lacked love and care.
